Water Conservation

Water is a precious commodity that we often don't appreciate until it becomes scarce. For many people, water conservation is a way of life. The rest of us may need a little help making the most of this precious resource. That's why we have provided some tips below.

According to the U.S. EPA, each American household uses an average of 94,000 gallons of water per year. Half of that usage takes place in the bathroom. Some simple attention to your plumbing can reduce your water usage and save on energy and utility bills.

  • Repair all leaks. A leaky toilet can waste 200 gallons per day.

  • Install ultra low-flow toilets and low-flow aerators and showerheads.

  • Consider purchasing a high efficiency washing machine, which can save over 50% in water and energy use.

  • Do not let the water run while shaving or brushing teeth.

  • Take short showers instead of tub baths. Turn off the water flow while soaping or shampooing. If you must use a tub, close the drain before turning on the water and fill the tub only half full.

  • Operate the dishwasher only when completely full. Use the appropriate water level or load size selection on the washing machine.
